Free Press Summer Fest 2013

Last year Houston’s very own music festival Free Press Summer Fest displayed the city in a light that music lovers from the city aspired it to be since the live music scene has been surging venues. With venues like Warehouse Live, Fitzgerald’s, House of Blues, and Bayou Music center, to name a few getting big acts to perform to our city this gives us a larger demand for musicians to stop by Houston through their Austin stop. Now some artist do not even stop in Austin *gasps.*

With artists such as Snoop Dogg (AKA Snoop Lion, AKA Nemo Hoes, AKA Finding Nemo), Young the Giant, Major Lazer, Pretty Lights, Best Coast, Two Door Cinema Club, The Avett Brothers, Willie Nelson, and many more, Free Press gives the people of the most diverse city in the country a musical portal to reflect the diversity of the community. All of the artist give a different energy to a crowd which gives it back even through the summer heat of Texas.

The reasoning behind hosting this festival in the summer is pondered by many. Although I have not been able to talk to anyone from Free Press to explain, the rational reasoning would be to not compete with other musical endeavors that take place around the same time. Spring hosts to us in Texas, SXSW (South by Southwest) which is impossible to even compete with, and also gives Houston the trickle of a few artists which together could not give a festival like SXSW. During the fall we have the now two weekend long ACL (Austin City Limits) which as of right now holds some A list artists as well as keeps true to its nature giving us some more independent and rising talent.

With it only being a few months until June 1st and 2nd, there are the rumors flying around to some of the talent that will be brought this year to the stage. Last year we were able to tell you that Two Door Cinema Club was going to be playing and we were correct, so this year let us hope not to jinx it. With the Facebook Page of Free Press Summer Fest posting a video of the new track by The Postal Service, the speculation is that they will perform. Now that the band has released their tour schedule, there is a high probability that they will be performing due to them being at Grand Prairie on June 3rd.

All we can do now is look at our favorite artist and see if there are any blank spots on their tour schedule and hope they stop by Free Press Summer Fest. We will keep you updated on the rumors about any bands that are to play at the festival.

Who would you like to see play this year? Remember, it sounds better live!
